Japanese dating and etiquette advice?

I want to ask a Japanese foreign exchange student out on a date. However, I want to do this in a non-threatening and as polite way as possible. I am studying Japanese, however, this is a topic obviously not covered very well in a textbook or not at all.

Is there anything I should do or not do to be polite and considerate to her culture?Japanese dating and etiquette advice?
Don't chew gum when meeting someone for the first time. There are a lot of things that apply in Japan, but I don't know about them in America. Just be respectful and polite like you were taught.Japanese dating and etiquette advice?
The Japanese find gentle touching of non-sexual body parts to be comforting even with acquaintances and potential boyfriends. Try stroking her arm gently and nonsexually or tap her neck to convey a more friendly presence. They also like little gifts to celebrate a new friendship. Wrap it in some simple but elegant tissue paper or if possible an ornate napkin
